Select Volleyball.
Dig Deeper.
Reston Volleyball Select is designed for middle-school athletes who already have a foundation in volleyball or another team sport and are ready for a more challenging, competitive experience.
More Challenge. Still Focused On Development.
Reston Volleyball describes Select as a more intense level of play for athletes seeking a competitive volleyball experience while continuing to grow and develop in a supportive environment.
Who Select Is Designed For
The main Reston Volleyball page describes Select as being designed for 7th- and 8th-grade athletes who have a foundational understanding of volleyball or another team sport.
Sixth graders who demonstrate the maturity, potential, and ability to keep up with the learning trajectory of 7th/8th-grade Select athletes are also welcome to try out under the current league structure.
The Path To A Select Team
Reston Volleyball requires registration before trying out for Select. Tryout dates are communicated to registered families.
Register
House and Select registration are required before a player tries out for Select. Use the Reston Sports Registration page for the current registration path.
Attend Tryouts
Select tryouts take place before teams are formed. For Fall, current league information places tryouts in mid-to-late August.
Roster Selection
Select athletes are drafted and offered roster spots. Teams are built based on talent and team balance rather than friend requests.
Join The Team
Athletes who accept Select roster spots move into the more competitive Select practice and match structure for that season.
Important: Register For House Too
Reston Volleyball currently advises 7th/8th-grade boys and girls interested in Select to register early for House. That is how an athlete can retain a league spot if they are not offered a Select roster position.
Girls & Boys Select
Both programs are competitive and tryout based, but the current league structure describes some differences in practices and match competition.
Girls Select
Girls Select provides a more competitive experience for athletes beyond the introductory level.
- Practices Once per week; attendance is required.
- Fall Matches Saturday matches against the other Reston Volleyball Select team or friendlies against area teams.
- Spring Matches Saturday matches against other local-area teams.
- Match Window Typically 1.5 hours; first to three sets out of five, sets to 21 or win by two as time allows.
- Playing Time Not guaranteed.
Boys Select
Boys Select plays within the NOVA Boys volleyball structure, providing middle-school athletes a more competitive volleyball experience.
- Practices Up to two times per week; attendance is required.
- Matches Saturday matches against other NOVA Boys Select teams throughout Fairfax County.
- Area Competition The current league page gives McLean, Vienna, and Chantilly as examples of other participating areas.
- Match Window Approximately 1.5 hours; first to three sets out of five, sets to 21 or win by two as time allows.

Competitive Teams Are Built Differently.
Select roster decisions are made around competition and team balance, rather than the friend-request approach that may be available in House.
Team Size
Reston Volleyball currently aims for teams of approximately 10–12 players in both House and Select. Actual roster size can vary with registrations, volunteers, and gym availability.
No Friend Requests
Select players are drafted and offered spots. Friend requests are not accepted for Select rosters.
Team Balance
Reston Volleyball states that Select teams are rostered based on talent and team balance, with the focus remaining on growth and development in a competitive setting.
Spring & Fall Select
Select is offered in both Reston Volleyball seasons. The exact competition format can vary between Spring and Fall.
Fall Volleyball
The current Fall structure places Select tryouts in mid-to-late August, followed by team formation and the start of practices and matches in September.
- Fall registration opens in June
- Select tryouts occur in August
- Teams form in late August / early September
- Practices and matches begin in September
Spring Volleyball
The current Volleyball program page lists Spring registration opening in January, Select tryouts at the end of February, and matches beginning in late March.

- End of February: Select tryouts
- February / March: registration closes
- Late March: matches begin
