Program Essentials

These details apply broadly across the volleyball program. House and Select pages provide division-specific policies.

Eligibility

Age & Grade

Athletes are generally eligible at age 9 or older by the season’s cutoff date and register in their grade division. Younger-player requests are reviewed individually.

Rosters

Team Size

The league aims for approximately 10–12 players per House or Select team. Actual team sizes depend on registrations, coaches, and gym availability.

Provided

Team Jersey

Reston Volleyball provides the team jersey after rosters are formed. Athletes provide shorts, socks, gym shoes, water, and optional kneepads.

Waitlists

Limited Capacity

Divisions move to a waitlist when full. A waitlisted athlete is notified if space becomes available, and payment is not taken unless the offered spot is accepted.

Financial Assistance

Scholarship Support

Qualified Fairfax County families may request financial assistance during registration. Required eligibility documentation must be provided.

Residency

All Are Welcome

Most athletes live in Fairfax County, but players from outside the county may participate and are subject to an additional county-assessed fee.

Help Make the Season Happen

Coach, Referee, or Volunteer.

Reston Volleyball relies on community volunteers to form teams and operate the league. Paid referees support match play.

Coach a Team

Head coaches receive one free athlete registration and may select from available practice days and times. Student coaches may receive community-service hours.

Coach Registration

Become a Referee

Prospective paid officials must be in high school or older and are selected based on volleyball experience. Approximately two hours of preseason training is required.

Referee Application

Support the League

Additional volunteers help with league operations, team support, and game-day needs. Contact Reston Sports if you can help in a role other than coaching.

Quick Answers

Volleyball FAQ

A quick starting point for athletes and families choosing a program.

Does my athlete need volleyball experience?

House Volleyball welcomes beginners and athletes refining their skills. Select is intended for athletes with a foundation in volleyball or another team sport.

Are tryouts required?

Tryouts are required for Select Volleyball. House Volleyball does not require tryouts.

Can House players request friends?

House families may request friends, and the league honors requests where possible. Requests cannot be guaranteed because team balance, registration numbers, and coach availability also affect rosters.

How often do teams practice?

House teams generally practice once per week. Select practice attendance is required, with one or two weekly practices depending on the division and available gym time.

What equipment does my athlete need?

Reston Volleyball supplies the team jersey. Families provide shorts, socks, gym shoes, a water bottle, and optional kneepads.

What happens when Fairfax County closes facilities?

Practices and matches may be cancelled because of weather or special facility activities. Reston Volleyball communicates schedule changes when county information becomes available.
